license to live; a story for the old and the young

I recently picked a new doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing 'fairly well' for my age [I just turned 60].

A little concerned about his comment, I couldn't resist asking him, 'Do you think I'll live to be 80?'

He asked me, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?' 'Oh no,' I replied. 'And I'm not doing any drugs, either!'

Then he asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?

' 'Not much’ I replied. ‘My former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!'

'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?'

'No, I avoid the sun as much as possible,' I replied.

He asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?' 'No,' I replied. ‘I’m being extremely careful.’

He looked at me and asked, 'Then why do you even give a shit?’

No, I think the message is: if there is nothing you do for fun, why bother living a long life? Life will inevitalby kill you in the end, no matter how little risks you take. You should take care of your health in order to live your life, not live in order to take care of your health. People always say the want to live long, but they never say why. What the story intentionally leaves open, is the narrators answer. Maybe he has one and maybe you do too. You better. :-)

Thanks John. The way I see it, life is for living. It's about quality, not quantity. It's all very well living until you are 80 -- quantity -- but if you take all the fun out of it, what's the point. Reminds me of the tombstone that reads: Died in 1986, buried in 2009. Richard :)

Wonderful words of wisdom., the secret in my opinion, is to do your best at what you do,= happiness.

Now, how long you live is a very complex question., but do your best while your here., share the good things in life, and help people feel good by the things that you say.

kind regards.

I read this joke in Reader's Digest. It's starting to become common probably!
